Home Security Systems: An Overview March 5, 2018 – Posted in: News
Protecting your home is instinctive behaviour for humans. From lighting fires and sharpening spears in neanderthal times, to building moats around castles, the human race has always come up with ingenious ways of protecting their humble abode. In the technological age, however, home security systems have become much more sophisticated, making us better than ever before at dealing with threats to our homes. Providing a list of home security systems and an analysis of their effectiveness, Altis Industries Ltd tell you everything you need to know about home security systems.
In our latest blog post, we will outline some of the highlights of our home security range and discuss which system might be best for your home, and we ask the question: do home security systems really work? And, if so, how exactly do they work?
Types of Home Security Systems
The first thing to understand is that there are many different types of home security systems, all of which can be broken down by what you are looking to achieve. If you are looking for surveillance, then security cameras can be fitted to the outside of your home to monitor outside activity, and safes, locks and other security systems can be used to secure valuable items inside your home. The following list is a breakdown of some of our specific home security systems, with a detailed overview of their uses and benefits:

Fingerprinting technology can ensure that you and only you can access your goods.
How Do Home Security Systems Work?
Interestingly, home security systems are not designed to be effective in catching criminals, but deterring them. Although law and order TV shows and movies may show security cameras displaying HD, 4K images of criminals from miles away, the fact of the matter is that domestic and business-grade security cameras are unable of clearly identifying someone. Security cameras, for example, are more effective as a deterrent. In a study sponsored by the National Institute of Justice where 30 convicted burglars were interviewed, it was found that more than 90 percent of burglars said they wouldn’t target a home with visible home security systems. Furthermore, a study from the University of North Carolina which saw 400 burglars interviewed, over 80 percent of participants said they would search a property for home security systems before entering. As the above studies highlight, domestic security cameras may not be as effective in catching criminals, but they are one of the most effective deterrents.
As mentioned previously, intercoms are another way of deterring potential criminals from your property. Although the actual presence of a security camera can be enough to scare criminals off, being able to communicate with them directly provides another angle of protection. Although this blog post has focused on criminals, these systems do offer other purposes. Intercom systems have become increasingly popular during the last few years, and they can be handy for communicating with other people when you are not at home. For example, if you have a delivery due and the delivery driver rings your doorbell, you can talk to them on their phone and tell them to leave the parcel in a safe place. Despite being designed for safety and security, these systems to extend further beyond the realm of law and order.
Other items, such as safes and security storage systems, are relatively self-explanatory in terms of their effectiveness and their practices. The compact biometric safe we mentioned previously is fingerprint activated, ensuring that only you can access the contents of the safe, and due to its size, it can be tucked away in a safe and discreet place, completely out of site from a burglar. Safes are an essential piece of home security, as they are one of the most effective ways of securing essential items, such as passports and money.
Should You Invest?
It is clear to see that from the studies above, and the features mentioned in some of our signature home security systems, that investing in security cameras, safes and other items are a great way of protecting your home and the contents inside it.
